🍣 Torched Champion Rolls

🍣 Torched Champion Rolls

A sushi roll with knockout flavour, finished with a fiery blowtorch sear, because even raw fish deserves a fight camp.

What You’ll Need (Makes 4–5 rolls)

For the Sushi Rice

  • 2 cups sushi rice

  • 2½ cups water

  • â…“ cup rice vinegar

  • 3 Tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

For the Filling (mix & match to taste)

  • Fresh sashimi-grade salmon, tuna, or cooked prawn

  • Sliced avocado

  • Julienned cucumber

  • Cream cheese (optional for a fusion punch)

  • Mango slices for a sweet hit (Volk twist)

For the Topping

  • Japanese mayo

  • Unagi (eel) sauce or teriyaki glaze

  • Thin slices of salmon or tuna (to lay over rolls)

  • Optional: tobiko (fish roe), chives, or crispy shallots

Special Equipment

  • Bamboo sushi rolling mat

  • Blowtorch (Volk’s weapon of choice in this pic)

How to Make It

1. Cook the Rice Like a Pro

Rinse sushi rice until the water runs clear. Cook in a rice cooker or pot with water. Once done, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt; fold gently into the rice. Let cool to room temp.

2. Roll Call

Lay a sheet of nori on your bamboo mat. Spread a thin, even layer of rice over it, leaving about 2cm at the top edge. Arrange your chosen fillings in a line near the bottom edge.

3. Tight Roll

Using the mat, roll it up nice and snug. A champion’s roll is tight, no loose corners.

4. Dress to Impress

Lay thin slices of salmon or tuna over the top of the roll. Drizzle with mayo and unagi sauce in zigzags worthy of a knockout finish.

5. Torch Time

Here’s the Volk magic, fire up the blowtorch and lightly sear the top until the mayo bubbles and the fish edges caramelise. Don’t overdo it — you’re looking for a warm, smoky accent, not a full TKO.

6. Slice & Serve

Cut into 6–8 pieces with a sharp, damp knife. Garnish with tobiko, chives, or crispy shallots for extra flair.

Volk’s Pro Tips

  • Keep your hands wet when working with sushi rice - sticky fights are never fun.

  • If you can’t get sashimi-grade fish, use cooked prawn or crab sticks for safety.

  • That torch is your secret weapon - quick, controlled bursts, like a perfect combo.

From the Octagon to the kitchen, Volk turns sushi into a fiery spectacle. Torched, sauced, and ready to roll.
